I have a gag for Private Eye. A man says, “I have a great new idea for carbon capture.” Then there is an image of a tree like the ones in a children’s picture book.
Not only were 30,000 trees capturing carbon and emitting oxygen but they also had a network of underground roots that kept the soil intact and released water into the air in a process called transpiration. When they were cut down, the carbon dioxide escaped along with methane gas to add to the thick pollution from the vehicles up and down Lovers’ Lane en route to the site.
The Wetlands are special not just for their beautiful purple dragonflies and marsh harriers and rare species but as a flood outlet when the rains come. The Consultant I met on Sizewell Beach says it is now a crater. He had no idea this part of the world was so beautiful. He does a two day week in the office which has such high security you can barely go to the loo.
Well done, Sir Keir. Well done boss of EDF, whoever you are. You have accelerated climate change and endangered your electorate as well as damaging their mental health. If this is your idea of growth, how do you define destruction?
I am reading Enid Blyton. The Enchanted Wood.
