ROAD KILL

YUP. Badgers, deer, hares, pigeon, pheasants, squirrels and add humans to the list.

YUP. In my back yard. Got a lift to Aldeburgh to find on my return two police cars, a police motorcyclist and an elderly man knocked off his bike outside my front gate with a road closure and a blue sign I haven’t seen before: COLLISION.

By the time we’d parked in the ancient Norman round tower flint churchyard the ambulance arrived. The farmer’s son was there. I offered water. When I went trepidatiously to post letters it was as if nothing had happened.

It’s not safe cycling around here any more, in one of Britain’s most beautiful routes.

Can’t even get out of the door without anger rising in my throat.
